What are AMI Reads?
AMI reads are meter reads obtained using Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) which automatically collects water usage data through radio-based technology. The smart meter and the AMI belong to your water Wholesaler. If we receive AMI readings from your wholesaler, you will be able to access this data in the Customer Portal. Check your meter reading history for details.
This technology significantly improves the efficiency and accuracy of water meter readings, providing numerous benefits for both utility companies and customers.
How AMI works
AMI systems use advanced meters equipped with radio transmitters to send real-time water consumption data directly to the water Wholesaler. The data is transmitted wirelessly and securely, ensuring that the Wholesaler has accurate and up-to-date information on water usage.
How are AMI Reads used in billing?
If your meter provides AMI reads, you will typically see one new read every day in the Customer Portal. However, we only use one read each month to calculate your bills. Therefore, most AMI reads visible in the portal may not be validated for billing purposes, and we clearly indicate this in the list of readings. While we expect all AMI reads to be accurate, we do not run every single read through the additional checks we perform before using a read to calculate your bill.
Can I request AMI?
At present only a small number of customers have smart meters and AMI technology installed by the water Wholesaler, but Wholesalers are fitting more smart meters all the time, so this may well be something you can benefit from in the future. Before we share your request for AMI with the Wholesaler, we will ask you to agree to potential charges which may be incurred if the existing meter is still functional and able to be read.
The Wholesaler is likely to fit a smart meter at your premises at some point in the future, but the timing of the upgrade is beyond our control.
